If your water heater starts making more noise than usualÃ¢â‚¬â€ťa sort of whisle-whine like wind blowing through drafty windowsÃ¢â‚¬â€ťdoes that mean it’s about to die?

Gas or electric?
Around these parts, we have super hard water, which means scale can build up, and that can cause weird noises, but it’s usually a banging/clanking type noise.

Might want to get it checked out. Most water heaters have a pressure relief valve on them to ‘let off steam’ thus preventing an explosion. It can sound like a whistle.
