The Chimney Song

You know, this is the first holiday season I’ve had in, well, almost ever, where I don’t get huge blocks of time off for Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Years. Last week I had one day off; between Christmas and New Years it looks like I’ll only have one day off for each of them. (Although both of those days fall on Mondays this year, so that’s two three-day weekends in a row.) I really do like my job (although the stress can be more than I was prepared forÃ¢â‚¬â€ťmore on that another time), but the holidays are just very different when so much of them are spent at work.

Yesterday, in an effort to get a bit more into the holiday spirit, L. and I put up our tree for the first time evar and it’s beautiful. Bright and twinkly and very festive. During that project we turned on the local “all holiday music” radio station and heard what has to be one of the funniest holiday songs I’ve heard in some time. It was sung by what sounded like a very little girl and it was called “The Chimney Song.” You’d have to hear it to truly appreciate it, but the lyrics alone will give you the main idea:

There’s something stuck up in the chimney And I don’t know what it is,
But it’s been there all night long.
Well, I waited up for Santa all Christmas night
But he never came and it don’t seem right.
And there’s something in the chimney
And it doesn’t make a sound,
But I wish you Merry Christmas.

There’s something stuck up in the chimney
And I don’t know what it is,
But it’s been there all week long.
Well, the dog keeps barking up the chimney flue
And we don’t know what we’re going to do.
Cause there’s something in the chimney
And it doesn’t move around,
And it’s been a week since Christmas.

There’s something stuck up in the chimney
And I don’t know what it is,
But it’s been there all month long.
Well, it’s jammed up tight above the fireplace
Now the house smells funny, such a big disgrace.
That there’s something in the chimney
And it doesn’t talk at all,
And it’s been there since last Christmas.

There’s something stuck up in the chimney
And I don’t know what it is,
But it’s been there all year long.
I’ll been waiting up for Santa like I did last year
But my brother says, “He’s already here.”
And he’s stuck up in the chimney
And he doesn’t say a word
And he’ll be there every Christmas.
And we’ll have him every Christmas.
