Fiscally Who In The What Now?
Saying you’re “socially liberal but fiscally conservative” may help you sleep at night, but it’s really just a socially acceptible way of saying “I’m selfish.” ⇒

When I first entered law school, I thought that passing the bar was a euphemism that meant that when it was all over you could go into a bar and get any girl you wanted. Turns out, it’s some sort of test. @ Ha!

Actually, I’m with “Alan” from that comment thread. From now on, I’m calling myself, “Socially liberal and fiscally responsible.” What passes for mainstream “conservative” values these days (slashing capital gains, while deficit spending faster than Michael Jackson in Vegas) really irks me. Tax and spend liberal? At least the liberals were taxing to pay for their spending! I like to tease my conservative friends by calling them “Spend and spend and spend and spend Republicans”. :)

I liked your comment a lot - I enjoy when the commenters can get feisty with each other when I’m hesistant to jump in and yell at my friends :) For me “fiscally responsible” is nice, but pretty content-free, so I’d definitely want to know what that’s supposed to mean, the way Alan clarified it.
The military budget seems to confuse the issue so much, as you pointed out - is “cut social services but keep a blank check open on the military” FISCALLY conservative in any way? Is the opposite priority? Damn constant war…
